Led by the Pese Mai team at Cranbourne West Secondary College and developed in partnership with the Victorian State Schools Spectacular, the program involves students working collaboratively to design and rehearse a performance, culminating in their feature as an Independent Performing Group in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular each year. The program offers students numerous opportunities to celebrate their culture through large-scale performances, fantastic networking experiences with prominent figures in the Victorian entertainment industry and aims to foster positive connections and a sense of community across Victoria for students of Pacific Islander background.
A primary objective of the Pese Mai program is to achieve significant improvements in student outcomes related to wellbeing, engagement and academic performance. This objective is underpinned by a robust values system, encapsulated by the acronym “Pese Mai,” which guides all program activities:
P – Perseverance
We persevere throughout the year to reach our Fa’amoemoe (Samoan for purpose).
E – Empowerment
We feel empowered through the celebration of our culture.
S – Solidarity
We stand together as one solid Whanau (Te Reo Māori for family) – We have each other’s back!
E – Equality
We treat everyone Fakatatau (Tongan for Equal) – regardless of age, race, school, or postcode!
M – Maturity
We will demonstrate maturity throughout the year, both during Pese Mai events and in our daily lives.
A – Accountability
We will hold ourselves and our peers accountable, ensuring we remember Tāua (Samoan for Important) dates, arrive on time and prepared and call out behaviours that do not align with our values.
I – Initiative
We will show initiative throughout the year. If someone needs Fesoasoani (Samoan for help), help them! If you have an idea for an Angaanga (Cook Island Māori for Activity), tell us!
