At Cranbourne West Secondary College, English focuses on the fundamentals of effective communication in the modern era.
Students develop skills and confidence in how language is received (through reading, listening and viewing), and producing language (through writing and speaking). Students are encouraged to analyse and question the use of language and its effect on specific audiences through reading, analysing, and discussing a wide range of texts, both teacher selected and through the Independent Reading Program.
They have the opportunity to expand their own use of language through the production of their own texts – in imaginative, informative and persuasive forms – giving consideration to their audience and purpose. Students develop independent research skills through preparation and production of recorded interviews and research products aimed at fostering critical thinking. English also provides opportunities for students to build ICT literacy skills and become critical of information presented on the internet.
Some of the extra-curricular English activities that students have the opportunity to take part in include:

- ‘Fresh Words’ writing competition
- Prime Minister’s National Spelling Bee
Senior English
When producing their own writing and oral responses, students learn to adjust their language based on purpose, audience, and context, to build clarity and voice.
Senior English emphasises planning, drafting, and refining work. Research and inquiry skills develop through analytical investigations and oral presentations. Students also improve their ICT literacy as they learn to assess the reliability of information and communicate effectively across digital platforms.
Senior English aims to prepare students with the communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills necessary for success in VCE, future studies, and the wider world.
