Performing Arts

The Performing Arts programs at Cranbourne West Secondary College offer students the opportunity to explore how music and drama foster the development of empathetic, independent, and creative lifelong learners.

Music is an engaging, hands-on subject that immerses students in learning a variety of instruments and electronic music techniques. Students explore performance on classic rock instruments and have the chance to refine their skills on their chosen instrument. Additionally, they use electronic composition software to create their own unique music.

Year 10 students are offered two specialized music opportunities: Beatlab and Gig Workshop. Beatlab is a program focused on developing electronic music production skills, where students learn to compose music using modern equipment and software. In contrast, Gig Workshop is a performance-based class that gives students the chance to connect with established venues throughout Melbourne. Students in this class work on their live performance skills and gain the unique experience of performing at professional music venues, allowing them to showcase their talents in a real-world setting.

Drama is a highly practical subject that emphasizes the development of essential skills such as collaboration, self-discipline, organization, audience etiquette, creativity, and problem-solving. Students explore dramatic elements through various activities, including group work, individual performances, and the use of ICT.

In addition, students have the opportunity to focus on specific areas of drama, such as monologue performance, where they can develop their solo acting skills, and stagecraft and design, which involves learning how to manage the technical aspects of a production, including lighting, sound, and set design. Through these experiences, students gain a comprehensive understanding of both the performance and technical sides of theatre, equipping them for future creative endeavours.
